Luma Pictures partnered with Netflix for the highly anticipated film, "The Mother," which quickly became one of Netflix's most popular films to date. Directed by Nick Caro, the film follows a former US army operative, played by Jennifer Lopez, who joins forces with an FBI agent to rescue her kidnapped teenage daughter from criminals.

Behind the scenes, Luma played a pivotal role in bringing the climactic third act to life. Our team was entrusted with delivering 140 shots across two sequences, immersing viewers in the intense confrontation between Jennifer Lopez's character and a group of mercenaries in the harsh Alaskan snow. Luma delivered a range of invisible vfx shots, including amplifying the impact of the practical cabin explosion, enhancing the chase moments, and ensuring consistency in blood spatter effects.

Crafting the snowmobile cabin explosion shot required Luma to seamlessly blend plates of the icy lake and snow-covered trees, meticulously recreating a winter environment. Our team designed a fully CG snowmobile and bomb, striking a delicate balance between practical effects and digital enhancements for the subsequent cabin explosion.

In the sequence, JLO’s character kills one of the mercenaries and then dons the suit herself as a disguise. Our team carefully analyzed the first shot of the character's appearance and determined where the blood would realistically fall.  This intricate process involved a combination of 2D and 3D matchmoves tailored to each shot's specific requirements, accounting for factors like distance and clothing movement.
