From sun up to sun down, I was taught every possible way to kill a man.

For Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the Luma team was entrusted with 177 shots across three major sequences in the film, including the memorable fight scene aboard a moving bus. After collaborating with Chris Townsend (Marvel VFX Supervisor) and Damien Carr (Marvel VFX Producer) on the fight sequence aboard a moving train in Captain Marvel, the Luma team was tapped again to infuse that same realism and energy into the Shang-Chi bus-fight sequence that careens out of control in the streets of San Francisco.

The challenge at hand was making it appear as if the bus was really travelling through the streets in San Francisco. To achieve this, Luma ultiized live-action location plates, survey data, LIDAR scans, blue screen photography, as well as all the CG elements. Luma recreated the bus in full CG and developed CG dici-doubles of the bus passengers, a CG San Francisco environment, as well as complex face replacement work using deep learning technology.

We had to use every trick in the book that we’ve ever learned to put this action scene together and make it look as believeable as possible.
